Mauka Retreat Center
Kona Coast, Hawai’i
Program: Environmental education station and tribal retreat center
Size: 3,200 SF + multiple acre site
Completion date: In progress
Project architect from Conceptual through Design Development phases. Early client-facing work to assess the site and zoning feasibility, followed by development and presentation of a variety of design schemes for their review and approval. Eventually, Josh led the team toward a proof-of-concept design that included an innovative structural system and skin elements to mitigate transportation constraints.
Situated on the flank of Mauna Kea, this project consists of a new environmental education and cultural facility for the Queen Liliuokalani Trust. The program includes a 48-seat open-air amphitheater, facilities building and parking. The space is designed to allow for gathering of children and families in traditional Native Hawaiian cultural activities. Inspired by the form of the ipu, a traditional percussive instrument for hula made from a native gourd. The space is aligned with entry 'mauka' (landward) and view out 'makai’ (seaward). The structure is designed with a jointed wood lamellar shell structure and panelized zinc roof to allow for mainland prefabrication and transport of all numbered components to the Big Island via shipping container.
